According to a classical result of H. Berens and R. DeVore, within some natural classes of polynomial valued operators the Bernstein operators approximate convex functions in an optimal way. Motivated by applications to CAGD, recently there has been an increasing interest concerning generalized Bernstein bases in the framework of extended Chebyshev spaces. The authors show that the generalized Bernstein operators associated to such generalized Bernstein bases share the optimality property of the classical Bernstein operators under a suitable generalized notion of convexity. The paper includes also a selfcontained and streamlined presentation of the generalized Bernstein operators introduced by \textit{S. Morigi} and \textit{M. Neamtu} [Adv. Comput. Math. 12, No. 2--3, 133--149 (2000; Zbl 1044.42500)], which preserve the convexity with respect to \(\{1, e^x\}\).
