For an integer \(n\geq 1\), let \(L^2(\mathbb{D},\mathbb{C}^n)\) be the space of all measurable \(\mathbb{C}^n\)-valued functions \(f\) for which \(\|f\| = (\int_{\mathbb{D}}\|f(z)\|_{\mathbb{C}^n}^2 dA(z))^{1/2}<\infty\). Here, \(dA\) denotes the Lebesgue measure on \(\mathbb{D}\). The vector-valued Bergman space \(L^2_{a}(\mathbb{D},\mathbb{C}^n)\) is the subspace of \(L^2(\mathbb{D},\mathbb{C}^n)\) which consists of the analytic functions. The space \(L^2_a(\mathbb{D},\mathbb{C})\) (when \(n=1\)) is the usual (scalar-valued) Bergman space of the unit disk. Let \(P\) denote the orthogonal projection from \(L^2(\mathbb{D},\mathbb{C}^n)\) onto \(L_{a}^2(\mathbb{D},\mathbb{C}^n)\). For an \(n\times n\) matrix \(F\) of functions in \(L^2(\mathbb{D},\mathbb{C})\), the Toeplitz operator \(T_{F}\) is defined by \(T_{F}v = P(Fv)\), where \(v\) is a bounded analytic \(\mathbb{C}^n\)-valued function (considered as a column vector of complex-valued functions). The operator \(T_F\) is considered as a densely defined operator on \(L^2_{a}(\mathbb{D},\mathbb{C}^n)\). In the paper under review, the author is concerned with the problem: Given two \(n\times n\) matrices \(F\) and \(G\) of functions in \(L^2_a(\mathbb{D},\mathbb{C})\), under what conditions does the operator \(T_{F}T_{G^{*}}\) extend to a bounded operator on \(L^2_a(\mathbb{D},\mathbb{C}^n)\)? The conditions obtained in the paper involve the Berezin transform. Recall that the Berezin transform of a matrix \(A\) with entries in \(L^2(\mathbb{D},\mathbb{C})\) is a matrix-valued function \(B(A)\) defined by \(B(A)(w)=\int_{\mathbb{D}} A\circ\varphi_w(z)\,dA(z)\), where \(\varphi_w\) is the Möbius transform that interchanges \(w\) and \(0\), for \(w\in\mathbb{D}\). The necessary condition given in the paper asserts that, if the operator \(T_{F}T_{G^{*}}\) is bounded on \(L^2_a(\mathbb{D},\mathbb{C}^n)\), then the trace of the matrix \(B(F^{*}F)(w)B(G^{*}G)(w)\) is uniformly bounded in \(w\in\mathbb{D}\). It is unknown if this condition is also sufficient. On the other hand, the author provides some sufficient conditions. One of them states that, if for some \(\varepsilon >0\), the trace of the matrix \(B((F^{*}F)^{1+\varepsilon})(w)B((G^{*}G)^{1+\varepsilon})(w)\) is uniformly bounded in \(w\in\mathbb{D}\), then the product \(T_{F}T_{G^{*}}\) is bounded on \(L^2_a(\mathbb{D},\mathbb{C}^n)\). These results generalize the results in the scalar case obtained earlier by \textit{K. Stroethoff} and \textit{D.-C. Zheng} [J. Funct. Anal. 169, No.~1, 289--313 (1999; Zbl 0945.47019)]. The author also shows that, if one requires that the product \(T_{F}T_{G^{*}}\) be both bounded and invertible, then the following condition is necessary and sufficient: the trace of the matrix \(B(F^{*}F)(w)B(G^{*}G)(w)\) is uniformly bounded in \(w\) and there exists a constant \(\eta>0\) such that \(FG^{*}GF^{*}(z)>\eta I\) for all \(z\in\mathbb{D}\). This result generalizes a result in the scalar case obtained by \textit{K. Stroethoff} and \textit{D.-C. Zheng} [J. Oper. Theory 59, No.~2, 277--308 (2008; Zbl 1199.47127)].
