Let \(X\) be a finite-dimensional complex Banach space with the norm \(\| \cdot\| \) and let \(X^*\) be the dual of \(X\). Also let \(B\) the unit ball in \(X\). Suppose \(\alpha\in [0,1)\). A normalized (\(f(0)=0\) and \(Df(0)=I\)) locally biholomorphic mapping \(f:B\to X\) is called almost starlike of order \(\alpha\) if \[ \Re\{T_x[(Df(x))^{-1}f(x)]\}>\alpha \| x\| ,\, x\in B\setminus\{0\}, Tx\in T(x). \] The authors use the method of Loewner chains to prove the following characterization of almost starlikeness of type \(\alpha\), given in Theorem 2: Suppose \(f\) is a normalized locally biholomorphic mapping on \(B\), \(0\leq \alpha<1\). Then \(f\) is almost starlike mapping of order \(\alpha\) if and only if \(g(z,t)=e^{\frac{1}{1-\alpha}t}f(e^{\frac{\alpha}{\alpha-1}t}z)\), \(z\in B\), \(t\geq 0\), is a Löwner chain. In particular, \(f\) is a starlike mapping (i.e., \(\alpha=0\)) if and only if \(g(z,t)=e^tf(z)\) is a Löwner chain. On the other hand, the authors use the Roper-Suffridge extension operator to prove that it preserves the notion of almost starlikeness of order \(\alpha\) from dimension one to the \(n\)-dimensional case.
