Normal ideals in regular rings

From MaRDI portal

The Cohen-Macaulay property of the Rees algebra \(R[It] =\bigoplus_{n\geq 0}I^nt^n\) of a normal ideal \(I\) of a regular local ring \(R\) is studied with the aim to give examples to show that several results from the 2-dimensional case cannot be extended to higher dimension. If \(R\) is 3-dimensional containing a field of characteristic different from zero and \(I\) a height 2 unmixed ideal, generically a complete intersection and 4-generated, then an explicit characterisation is given for \(R[It]\) being Cohen-Macaulay. Using this characterisation, examples of normal ideals are given, whose Rees algebras are not Cohen-Macaulay. In the 2-dimensional case an integrally closed \({\mathfrak m}\)-primary ideal \(I\) is normal and has Cohen-Macaulay Rees algebra. -- Similarly a new example is given that the Grauert-Riemenschneider vanishing theorem cannot be extended.
