Numerical index of vector-valued function spaces

From MaRDI portal

The numerical radius of a bounded linear operator \(T\) on a Banach space \(X\) is defined by \(v(T)=\sup\{|x^*(Tx)|\colon x\in S_X, x^*\in S_{X^*}, x^*(x)=1\}\). The numerical index \(n(X)\) of the space \(X\) is the greatest constant \(k\geq 0\) such that \(k\|T\|\leq v(T)\) for each \(T\in L(X)\). NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe authors show that the numerical index of the \(c_0\)-, \(\ell_1\)- or \(\ell_\infty\)-sum of an arbitrary family of Banach spaces is the infimum of the numerical indices of the respective summands. They further show that the vector-valued function spaces \(C(K,X)\) and \(L_1(\mu,X)\) (with \(K\) compact Hausdorff space and \(\mu\) any positive measure) have the same numerical index as the space \(X\). Finally, it is proved by similar methods that the spaces \(C(K,X)\) and \(L_1(\mu,X)\) have Daugavet property whenever \(X\) has Daugavet property. (A Banach space \(X\) has Daugavet property if \(\|\roman{Id}+T\|=1+\|T\|\) for each rank-one operator \(T\) on \(X\).).
