On circle actions with exactly three fixed points

From MaRDI portal

This paper studies smooth closed orientable \(S^1\)-manifolds \(M\) with exactly \(3\) fixed points. The author shows that the dimension of \(M\) has the form \(4\cdot 2^a\) or \(8\cdot (2^a+2^b)\) where \(a\), \(b\) are distinct non-negative integers. In addition, he shows that \(\dim M=8\) or \(16\) if \(M\) is spin, and \(\dim M=4\) if \(M\) is unitary (that is, the stable tangent bundle has a complex structure). This result is related to a conjecture by Kosniowski about isolated fixed points of \(S^1\)-actions [\textit{C. Kosniowski}, Lect. Notes Math. 788, 331--339 (1980; Zbl 0433.57016)]. The methods used involve equivariant cohomology, the Hirzebruch signature theorem and the Atiyah-Bott-Berline-Vergne localization formula.
