Polynomiality of surface braid and mapping class group representations

From MaRDI portal

The representation theory of surface braid groups and of mapping class groups has been the subject of intensive study [\textit{D. Margalit}, Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 102, 157--186 (2019; Zbl 1469.20036)]. This paper studies \textit{coherent representations} of surface braid groups and of mapping class groups which are constructed systematically from natural actions on the homology of configuration spaces on the underlying surface, with coefficients twisted by certain local systems on these configuration spaces. Special cases of this construction recover the \textit{Lawrence-Bigelow representations} of the classical braid groups [\textit{S. Bigelow}, Geom. Topol. Monogr. 7, 493--507 (2004; Zbl 1080.20003); \textit{R. J. Lawrence}, Commun. Math. Phys. 135, No. 1, 141--191 (1990; Zbl 0716.20022)], the \textit{An-Ko representations} of surface braid groups [\textit{B. H. An} and \textit{K. H. Ko}, Pac. J. Math. 247, No. 2, 257--282 (2010; Zbl 1247.20045)] and \textit{Moriyama representations} of mapping class groups [\textit{T. Moriyama}, J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 76, No. 2, 451--466 (2007; Zbl 1158.55020)]. The construction depends on a choice of an ordered partition \(\lambda\)\ of a positive integer \(k\), corresponding to the number and partitions of points in the configuration space, together with a positive integer \(l\), corresponding to the depth of an associated lower central series quotient that determines the local system. This produces a functor\N\[\N\mathcal{L}_{\left( \lambda,l\right) }:\left\langle \mathcal{G} ,\mathcal{M}\right\rangle \rightarrow R\text{-}\mathrm{Mod}^{\mathrm{tw}}\N\]\Ncalled a \textit{homological representation functor}, where \(R\)-\(\mathrm{Mod} ^{\mathrm{tw}}\)\ is the category of \textit{twisted} \(R\)-modules. This paper aims to establish polynomiality properties for homological representation functors.\N\NThe main result of the paper goes as follows (Theorems 3.17, 3.24 and 3.35):\N\NTheorem. For any positive integer \(k\geqslant2\), any ordered partition \(\lambda=\left( \lambda_{1},\ldots,\lambda_{r}\right) \vdash k\)\ and any positive integer \(l\geqslant1\), there is a short exact sequence\N\[\N0\rightarrow\mathcal{LB}_{\left( \lambda,l\right) }\rightarrow\tau _{1}\mathcal{LB}_{\left( \lambda,l\right) }\rightarrow\bigoplus \limits_{1\leqslant j\leqslant r}\tau_{1}\mathcal{LB}_{\left( \lambda\left[ j\right] ,l\right) }\rightarrow0\N\]\Nof functors \(\left\langle \beta,\beta\right\rangle \rightarrow R\)-\(\mathrm{Mod}\). There are analogous short exact sequences of functors in the settings of surface braid groups and mapping class groups of surfaces. In the last case, these short exact sequences are moreover split.
