Abstract: For fcolon[0,1]areal+, consider the relation mathbfEf on [0,1]omega defined by (xn)mathbfEf(yn)Leftrightarrowsumn<omegaf(|yn−xn|)<infty. We study the Borel reducibility of Borel equivalence relations of the form mathbfEf. Our results indicate that for every 1leqp<q<infty, the order leqB of Borel reducibility on the set of equivalence relations is more complicated than expected, e.g. consistently every linear order of cardinality continuum embeds into it.

For every function \(f:[0,1]\to\mathbb{R}^+\) there is a relation \(E_f\) on \([0,1]^\omega\) such that \[ (x_n) E_f (y_n)\iff \sum\limits_{n=0}^\infty f(|y_n-x_n|) < \infty. \] The following questions arise naturally: {\parindent=6mm \begin{itemize}\item[(1)] Is \(E_f\) an equivalence relation? \item[(2)] Which equivalence relations can be obtained in the form \(E_f\)? \item[(3)] For which functions \(f,g:[0,1]\to [0,1]\) is \(E_f\) Borel-reducible to \(E_g\)? \end{itemize}} In the paper, the authors give an answer to question (1), initiate a study of question (2), and provide various conditions on \(f\) and \(g\) with respect to question (3).
