Abstract: In this work we characterize Ulrich bundles of any rank on polarized rational ruled surfaces over mathbbP1. We show that every Ulrich bundle admits a resolution in terms of line bundles. Conversely, given an injective map between suitable totally decomposed vector bundles, we show that its cokernel is Ulrich if it satisfies a vanishing in cohomology. As a consequence we obtain, once we fix a polarization, the existence of Ulrich bundles for any admissible rank and first Chern class. Moreover we show the existence of stable Ulrich bundles for certain pairs (extrmrk(E),c1(E)) and with respect to a family of polarizations. Finally we construct examples of indecomposable Ulrich bundles for several different polarizations and ranks.

The author characterizes the Ulrich bundles on polarized Hirzebruch surfaces as the kernel (resp. the cokernel) of a surjective (resp. injective) map of totally decomposed vector bundles. Conversely, it is shown that for the kernel or cokernel of such a map to be an Ulrich bundle, the vanishing of some cohomological groups are necessary. In particular, the existence of Ulrich bundle for any admissible rank and Chern class is proved. Moreover, the features of the moduli space of stable Ulrich bundle with prescribed first and second Chern class are described. Reviewer's remark: On p. 63, \S 3, first line, in definition of \(M_h(r,c_1,c_2)\), one has to replace ``rank two with ``rank \(r\).
