Abstract: In this paper, we give a detailed proof to a result of Gabber (unpublished) on the lifting problem of quasi-excellent rings, extending the previous work on Nishimura-Nishimura. As a corollary, we establish that an ideal-adic completion of an excellent (resp. quasi-excellent) ring is excellent (resp. quasi-excellent).

In the paper under review, the authors give a detailed proof of the following unpublished theorem of Gabber: (1) Let \(A\) be a Noetherian ring and \(I\) an ideal of \(A\) such that \(A\) is complete for the \(I\)-adic topology. If the quotient ring \(A/I\) is quasi-excellent, so is \(A\). As a consequence, they deduce: (2) Let \(A\) be an excellent (resp. quasi-excellent) ring and \(I\) a proper ideal of \(A\). Then the \(I\)-adic completion of \(A\) is an excellent (resp. quasi-excellent) ring.
