Abstract: Let be a smooth compact oriented Riemannian manifold, and let be the Laplace-Beltrami operator on . Say 0eqfinmathcalS(RR+), and that f(0)=0. For t>0, let Kt(x,y) denote the kernel of . We show that Kt is well-localized near the diagonal, in the sense that it satisfies estimates akin to those satisfied by the kernel of the convolution operator f(t2Delta) on RRn. We define continuous calS-wavelets on , in such a manner that Kt(x,y) satisfies this definition, because of its localization near the diagonal. Continuous calS-wavelets on are analogous to continuous wavelets on RRn in mathcalS(RRn). In particular, we are able to characterize the Hddotolder continuous functions on by the size of their continuous mathcalS−wavelet transforms, for Hddotolder exponents strictly between 0 and 1. If is the torus TT2 or the sphere S2, and f(s)=se−s (the ``Mexican hat situation), we obtain two explicit approximate formulas for Kt, one to be used when t is large, and one to be used when t is small.

\textit{F. J. Narcowich}, \textit{P. Petrushev} and \textit{J. D. Ward} [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 38, No. 2, 574--594 (2006; Zbl 1143.42034)] constructed \(C^\infty\) tight frames on \({\mathcal S}^n\) using for this aim continuous wavelet technique (the Calderon formula, etc.). Generalizing that approach and adding some new ingredients related to spectral theory, the authors construct \(C^\infty\) continuous wavelets \(\{K_t\}_{t> 0}\) on a smooth oriented Riemannian manifold. For the case of the 2-torus and the ``Mexican hat situation, the authors present two explicite approximate formulas for \(K_t\) one near \(t=0\) and one near \(t=\infty\).
