Abstract: We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a matrix $A$ to be Birkhoff-James orthogonal to another matrix $B$ in the Ky Fan $k$-norms. A characterization for $A$ to be Birkhoff-James orthogonal to any subspace $mathscrW$ of $mathbbM(n)$ is also obtained.
