Abstract: Spectral properties of Jacobi operators are intimately related to an asymptotic behavior of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials as . We study the case where the off-diagonal coefficients and, eventually, diagonal coefficients of tend to infinity in such a way that the ratio has a finite limit . %We study an asymptotic behavior as of the orthogonal polynomials defined by Jacobi recurrence coefficients (off-diagonal terms) and (diagonal terms). %We consider the case and suppose that the sequence has a limit as . In the case asymptotic formulas for generalize those for the Hermite polynomials and the corresponding Jacobi operators have absolutely continuous spectra covering the whole real line. If , then spectra of the operators are discrete. Our goal is to investigate the critical case that occurs, for example, for the Laguerre polynomials. The formulas obtained depend crucially on the rate of growth of the coefficients (or ) and are qualitatively different in the cases where faster or slower then . For the fast growth of , we also have to distinguish the cases and . Spectral properties of the corresponding Jacobi operators are quite different in all these cases. Our approach works for an arbitrary power growth of the Jacobi coefficients.
