Rank-one Hilbert geometries
The author develops a notion of rank-one properly convex domains in real projective space, together with that of rank-one Hilbert geometries that they carry. Rank-one isometries and their geometric properties are characterized as being equivalent to contracting elements, in the sense of geometric group theory. The author studies rank-one groups that are Zariski dense. One result is that if a discrete subgroup of automorphisms of a Hilbert geometry contains a rank-one isometry, then the subgroup is either virtually cyclic or acylindrically hyperbolic. This leads to several applications, including the computation of the dimension of the space of quasimorphisms, counting results for conjugacy classes and genericity results for rank-one isometries from the viewpoint of random walks.
