Resolvent representations for functions of sectorial operators

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: We obtain integral representations for the resolvent of psi(A), where psi is a holomorphic function mapping the right half-plane and the right half-axis into themselves, and A is a sectorial operator on a Banach space. As a corollary, for a wide class of functions psi, we show that the operator −psi(A) generates a sectorially bounded holomorphic C0-semigroup on a Banach space whenever −A does, and the sectorial angle of A is preserved. When psi is a Bernstein function, this was recently proved by Gomilko and Tomilov, but the proof here is more direct. Moreover, we prove that such a permanence property for A can be described, at least on Hilbert spaces, in terms of the existence of a bounded Hinfty-calculus for A. As byproducts of our approach, we also obtain new results on functions mapping generators of bounded semigroups into generators of holomorphic semigroups and on subordination for Ritt operators.

The authors provide a number of interesting results involving sectorial operators and generators of holomorphic semigroups. Let \(A\) be a Banach space sectorial operator with sector \(S_{\theta } \) and let \(f(z)\) be a holomorphic function on this sector such that \(f(A)\) is defined through an appropriate functional calculus. Recently, \textit{A. Gomilko} and \textit{Y. Tomilov} proved that, if \(f(z)\) is a Bernstein function, then \(-f(A)\)generates a bounded holomorphic semigroup whenever \(-A\) does so [Adv. Math. 283, 155--194 (2015; Zbl 1319.47034)]. The present paper contains a more direct proof of this result and also many related results. The authors describe classes of analytic functions \(f(z)\) such that \(f(A)\) is again a sectorial operator of the same type as \(A\). These results are based on a very interesting integral representation of the resolvent operator \((z+f(A))^{-1}\).
