Schatten classes and traces on compact groups

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: In this paper we present symbolic criteria for invariant operators on compact topological groups G characterising the Schatten-von Neumann classes Sr(L2(G)) for all 0<rleqinfty. Since it is known that for pseudo-differential operators criteria in terms of kernels may be less effective (Carleman's example), our criteria are given in terms of the operators' symbols defined on the noncommutative analogue of the phase space GimeshatG, where G is a compact topological (or Lie) group and hatG is its unitary dual. We also show results concerning general non-invariant operators as well as Schatten properties on Sobolev spaces. A trace formula is derived for operators in the Schatten class S1(L2(G)). Examples are given for Bessel potentials associated to sub-Laplacians (sums of squares) on compact Lie groups, as well as for powers of the sub-Laplacian and for other non-elliptic operators on SU(2)simeqmathbbS3 and on SO(3).

A linear compact operator \(P\) on a Hilbert space \(H\) is called of Schatten class \(S_r(H)\), \(0<r<\infty\), if \[ \sum^\infty_{n=1} (s_n(P))^r< \infty, \] where \(s_n(P)\) denote the singular values of \(P\). Recently, the case of a pseudo-differential operator \(P\) was considered for general classes in \(\mathbb{R}^d\), see for example \textit{E. Buzano} and \textit{J. Toft} [J. Funct. Anal. 259, No. 12, 3080--3114 (2010; Zbl 1210.47072)]. In the present paper the authors address pseudo-differential operators on a compact topological group \(G\), as defined by the second author and \textit{V. Turunen} [Pseudo-differential operators and symmetries. Background analysis and advanced topics. Basel: Birkhäuser (2010; Zbl 1193.35261)]. Precise conditions for the validity of the Schatten property on \(H=L^2(G)\) are given in terms of the symbol of \(P\). A trace formula is derived as well for operators in \(S_1(L^2(G))\). Interesting applications concern negative powers of sum-of-squares operators, and pseudo-differential operators on \(G=\mathrm{SU}(2)\) and \(G=\mathrm{SO}(3)\).
