      Let \(0<p,q<\infty\) and \(s>\frac{1}{p} + (n-1) \big( \frac{1}{p} - 1 \big)_+\). Then \(f(x) \mapsto f(x',0)\) is a retraction from \[ B^s_{p,q} (\mathbb R^n) \quad \text{onto} \quad B^{s- \frac{1}{p}}_{p,q} (\mathbb R^{n-1}) \] and from \[ F^s_{p,q} (\mathbb R^n) \quad \text{onto} \quad B^{s- \frac{1}{p}}_{p,p} (\mathbb R^{n-1}). \] One can replace \(A^s_{p,q} (\mathbb R^n)\) with \(A \in \{ B,F \}\) by \(A^s_{p,q} (\mathbb R^n_+)\), where \(\mathbb R^n_+ = \{ x\in \mathbb R^n, x_n >0 \}\). It is the main aim of this paper to extend these classical trace assertions to corresponding spaces \(A^{s(\cdot)}_{p(\cdot), q(\cdot) }\) with variable exponents. This is based on related atomic and quarkonial decompositions.
