Gentle algebras were introduced in [\textit{I. Assem} and \textit{A. Skowroński}, Math. Z. 195, 269--290 (1987; Zbl 0601.16022)] as a class of tame algebras satisfying some restricted conditions on the quiver and on the relations defining the algebra. In the article [\textit{V. Bekkert} and \textit{H. A. Merklen}, Algebr. Represent. Theory 6, No. 3, 285--302 (2003; Zbl 1032.16011)], the authors parameterized the indecomposable objects of the bounded derived category \(D^{b}(\Lambda)\) of a gentle algebra \(\Lambda\). Even though the precise description of them is rather subtle, we may state that they are roughly given as certain equivalence classes of some constructions called \textit{homotopy string complexes}, \textit{(higher dimensional) homotopy band complexes}, and \textit{infinite homotopy string complexes} (see Thm. 3 of the previous reference). In the article under review, the authors provide an explicit basis of the space of morphisms \(\text{Hom}_{D^{b}(\Lambda)}(X,Y)\) in case \(X\) and \(Y\) are (finite or infinite) homotopy string complexes or one-dimensional band complexes (see Theorem 3.15). Moreover, they also studied the case when higher dimensional homotopy band complexes are also allowed, but obtaining in this case only the dimension of the corresponding space of morphisms (see Theorem 5.10). The computations are rather involved but the authors provide also several guiding examples, which makes the article valuable, since as they explain, there are not many examples of a more or less complete description of the bounded derived category of a finite dimensional algebra of global dimension greater than \(1\). As an application of all the knowledge gained, the authors recover the description of the irreducible morphisms in the category \(K^{b}(\text{proj}(\Lambda))\) of perfect complexes of \(\Lambda\)-modules obtained in [\textit{G. Bobiński}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 215, No. 4, 642--654 (2011; Zbl 1217.16014)] (see Theorem 6.6).
