An algebra \(A\) is called gentle if \(A\) is isomorphic to the path algebra of a bound quiver \((Q,R)\) satisfying the following conditions: (i) \(R\) consists of paths of length \(2\), (ii) for each vertex \(x\) of \(Q\) there are at most two arrows starting (terminating) at \(x\), (iii) for each arrow \(\alpha\colon x\to y\) in \(Q\) there is at most one arrow \(\beta\colon y\to z\) (\(\gamma\colon z\to x\)) such that \(\beta\alpha\not\in R\) (\(\alpha\gamma\not\in R\), respectively), (iv) for each arrow \(\alpha\colon x\to y\) in \(Q\) there is at most one arrow \(\beta\colon y\to z\) (\(\gamma\colon z\to x\)) such that \(\beta\alpha\in R\) (\(\alpha\gamma\in R\), respectively). \textit{J. Schröer} and \textit{A. Zimmermann} [Math. Z. 244, No. 3, 515-530 (2003; Zbl 1036.16004)] proved that the class of gentle algebras is closed under derived equivalence. The authors construct a function \(\varphi_A\colon\mathbb{N}^2 \to\mathbb{N}\) for a gentle algebra \(A\) such that if gentle algebras \(A\) and \(B\) are derived equivalent, then \(\varphi_A=\varphi_B\). The function \(\varphi_A\) corresponds to the action of the suspension functor on the components of the Auslander-Reiten quiver of the stable category of the repetitive algebra of \(A\) containing Auslander-Reiten sequences with indecomposable middle terms, however it is described purely in terms of the bound quiver defining \(A\).
