The authors provide several conditions that are equivalent to the idempotency of an adjointable operator on a Hilbert \(C^*\)-module \(X\), in particular, they show that an adjointable operator \(T\) is idempotent if and only if \((T^*T)^\dagger=(T^\dagger)^2T\), and this occurs if and only if \(\mathrm{ran}(I-T)\oplus \mathrm{ran}(T^*)=X\). They then obtain an explicit formula for the Moore-Penrose inverse of an idempotent \(2\times 2\) operator matrix. They employ range inclusions and idempotency of operators to get new conditions under which one can compute the Moore-Penrose inverse of Schur complements and generalized Schur complements of operators.
