Strong reality of finite simple groups.

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: The classification of finite simple strongly real groups is complete. It is easy to see that strong reality for every nonabelian finite simple group is equivalent to the fact that each element can be written as a product of two involutions. We thus obtain a solution to Problem 14.82 from the Kourovka notebook from the classification of finite simple strongly real groups.

Problem 14.82 of The Kourovka notebook [\textit{V. D. Mazurov} and \textit{E. I. Khukhro} (eds.), 14th ed. Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian division, Institute of Mathematics, Novosibirsk (1999; Zbl 0943.20003)] states: Find all finite simple groups whose every element is a product of two involutions. In the paper under review the authors produce a list of such groups, hence solving the mentioned problem completely.
