The two-dimensional border-collision normal form with a zero determinant

From MaRDI portal

This study explores border-collision bifurcations (BCBs) by analyzing the border-collision normal form, a simplified piecewise-linear, discrete-time model obtained through truncation and coordinate transformations. Unlike earlier research that typically assumes invertible map components, this work focuses on cases where one piece has a zero determinant, a condition often encountered in applications. This feature is known to generate highly intricate dynamics, even in two-dimensional systems. The paper systematically classifies parameter regions linked to period-adding, period-incrementing, mode-locking, and component doubling of chaotic attractors, while also identifying key bifurcation boundaries. Practical relevance is demonstrated through applications to two stick-slip friction oscillator models [\textit{Y. Yoshitake} and \textit{A. Sueoka}, ``Forced self-excited vibration with dry friction, in: Applied Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos of Mechanical Systems with Discontinuities, World Scientific, Singapore, 237--259. (2000); \textit{R. Szalai} and \textit{H. M. Osinga}, Chaos 18, No. 2, 023121, 11 p. (2008; Zbl 1307.37026); SIAM J. Appl. Dyn. Syst. 8, No. 4, 1434--1461 (2009; Zbl 1210.70018)] and a flu epidemic model [\textit{M. G. Roberts} et al., J. Math. Biol. 78, No. 3, 607--624 (2019; Zbl 1473.37106)], showing how the proposed method captures diverse and robust dynamics. A general approach is outlined for studying BCBs in ODE models: construct a return (Poincaré) map, compute the Jacobians of both sides at the bifurcation, and use numerical approximations to compute derivatives when exact solutions are infeasible. Additionally, two-parameter bifurcation analysis reveals structures for which no general theory is known, and the authors propose a basic strategy to tackle this matter.
