Topologically and rationally slice knots

From MaRDI portal

A knot in \(S^3\) is topologically slice if it bounds a locally flat disk in \(B^4\), and rationally slice if it bounds a smooth disk in a rational homology ball. This paper studies knots that are both topologically and rationally slice, constructing a family of examples that have infinite order in the classical (smooth) concordance group. In fact, the authors show that the concordance group of topologically and rationally slice knots contains a \(\mathbb{Z}^\infty\) subgroup. The paper can be considered as a sequel of [\textit{J. Hom} et al., Geom. Topol. 26, No. 7, 3143--3172 (2022; Zbl 1542.57003)], in which, using similar techniques, the authors had constructed examples of infinite order, rationally slice knots; they now include the additional restriction of the knots being topologically slice.\N\NThe knots in question are constructed with a smart combination of connected sums, Whitehead doubles and cablings, using the trefoil and figure-eight as starting building blocks. They are easily verified to be topologically and rationally slice, using Freedman's theorem on Alexander polynomial one knots and the fact that the figure-eight is rationally slice. Showing that they have infinite order in the concordance group is more difficult, and can be seen as a manifestation of the fact that cabling does not induce a homomorphism on the concordance group. The proof uses involutive knot Floer homology, supported by some explicit computations of relevant modules and maps using bordered Floer homology.
