The authors study the left supported algebras [introduced by \textit{I. Assem, F. U. Coelho}, and \textit{S. Trepode}, J. Algebra 281, No. 2, 518-534 (2004; Zbl 1078.16007)]. Recall that an algebra is called left supported if the left part of the module category is contravariantly finite in the module category, where by the left part of the module category one means the full subcategory of the module category whose indecomposable objects have the property that all their predecessors in the module category have projective dimension at most \(1\). In the paper the authors prove a series of characterizations of the left supported algebras (they have also dual versions for the right supported algebras). The obtained characterizations are two-fold: they are expressed either in terms of the left part of the module category or in terms of the category \(\mathcal R_0\) of the successors of injective modules. For example the authors prove that an algebra is left supported if and only if its left part coincides with the predecessors of the Ext-injective modules in the left part and if and only if the category \(\mathcal R_0\) is covariantly finite. We stress that the list of characterizations of the left supported algebras obtained in the paper is much longer. In addition to the above mentioned results, in the last section of the paper the authors investigate classes of algebras which may be characterized by finiteness or cofiniteness of the category \(\mathcal R_0\) and its dual.
