The authors define the notion ``tridiagonal pair'' of linear transformations on a vector space over a field and as special case ``sharp tridiagonal pair''. They classify up to isomorphism the sharp tridiagonal pairs. As a corollary they classify up to isomophism the tridiagonal pairs over an algebraically closed field.
