This paper is concerned with the study of positive bound states of the nonlinear elliptic equation \[ -\varepsilon^2\Delta u+V(x)u=K(x)f(u)\qquad x\in {\mathbb R}^N\;(N\geq 3), \] where \(\varepsilon \) is a positive parameter and \(V\), \(K\) are radial positive potentials. The authors are interested in the case where the solutions concentrate on a \(k\)-dimensional sphere (\(1\leq k\leq N-1\)) as \(\varepsilon\rightarrow 0\). The proof of the main result is based on the auxiliary result that a certain penalized problem has a least-energy solution. Next, the asymptotics of this solution are studied and decay estimates of the solution are obtained, showing that they also solve the original problem.
