Let \(\mathcal A\) be an algebra and \(\mathcal O\) a Hopf algebra with a right coaction \(\phi\colon{\mathcal A}\to{\mathcal A}\otimes{\mathcal O}\). A natural condition on this coaction is introduced -- the ``weakly multiplicative coaction'' of the title -- which ensures that the coinvariants \({\mathcal A}^{\phi,\theta}=\{a\in{\mathcal A}:\phi(a)=a\otimes 1\}\) of the coalgebra form a subalgebra of \(\mathcal A\). This condition is shown to hold for two particular coactions \(\alpha,\beta\colon{\mathcal A}\to{\mathcal A}\otimes{\mathcal O}\), when \(\mathcal O\) is the quantized function algebra of a semisimple group, \(\mathcal A\) is the coordinate algebra of the corresponding quantum matrix space, and \(\alpha,\beta\) are quantum analogues of the conjugation action on matrices. It is then shown how natural further hypotheses on \(\mathcal A\) and \(\mathcal O\), namely that \(\mathcal A\) is graded and \(\mathcal O\) is cosemisimple and coquasitriangular, imply that the algebra of coinvariants is finitely generated, graded and commutative.
