This paper studies the maximum number of limit cycles that bifurcate from a periodic annulus for a discontinuous quintic differential system. Using the first-order averaging method, the author proves that 8 is a lower bound of the maximum number and 10 is an upper bound. The theory of extended Chebyshev systems and some skills in dealing with the averaged function are used to obtain the main result of this paper.
