This work is concerned with a generalised form of the Kirchhoff equation that was introduced initially to describe the motion of a stretched elastic string. The equation under consideration is one-dimensional wave equation whose modulus is dependent on the displacement and its 2-norm on a Hilbert space with a forcing function depending on \(x, t\), the displacement, the displacement gradient and the velocity. Hence one obtains a non-linear integrodifferential equation which is equivalent to a nonhomogeneous quasilinear hyperbolic equation. The domain of the field equation is defined by \(0<x<1\) and \(0<t<T\). At \(x=0\) the displacement gradient is a given time dependent function whereas the displacement vanishes at \(x=1\). At \(t=0\) both the displacement and velocity fields are prescribed. Therefore, the solution for a boundary-initial value problem is sought. Boundary and initial conditions are rendered homogeneous by an appropriate transformation of dependent variable. It is further assumed that the forcing function is a first order polynomial in finitely many small parameters. The existence and uniqueness of a local weak solution has been proven by applying the Faedo-Galerkin and weak compact methods and by ingeneously employing techniques of functional analysis. The asymptotic expansion of the weak solution is also studied in detail.
