The present paper begins a two-part series on phase transitions in deformable solids, with and without mass transport, with the interface between phases being sharp and capable of supporting energy and stress; it discusses coherent phase transitions, while the subsequent paper will deal with incoherent transitions. The development proceeds in four steps: i) kinematics (including the presence of accretion, the motion of the phase interface relative to the underlying material); ii) mechanics (introducing deformational forces and accretive forces); iii) thermomechanics (including a prescription of the manner in which interfacial forces expend power); iv) constitutive theory (based on an extension of the Coleman-Noll procedure to multiphase continua). Both a simple theory without interfacial structure and a theory with interfacial structure are considered.
