Let \(q\) be a nonzero complex number which is not a root of unity. The authors introduce in this paper an action of the quantum loop algebra \(U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{gl}}_n)\) on the natural representation \(\Omega \cong \Omega_{(n)}\) and on the tensor space \(\Omega_{(n)}^{\otimes r}\), \(r\geq 1\), and show that this action coincides with the diamond action studied in their work with Fu and Qiang [\textit{B. Deng} et al., A double Hall algebra approach to affine quantum Schur-Weyl theory. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (2012; Zbl 1269.20045)]. Using this direct action, they establish a compatibility relation of the diamond actions with the natural embedding \(U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{gl}}_n) \hookrightarrow U_q(\hat{\mathfrak{gl}}_{n+1})\). These results are used to identify simple representations of the affine \(q\)-Schur algebra \(S_\Delta(n, r)_{\mathbb C}\). In this way the authors obtain a proof of the identification between two classification results for such simple representations in the case where \(n \leq r\); namely, the classification in terms of multisegments of total length \(r\), due to \textit{J. D. Rogawski} [Invent. Math. 79, 443--465 (1985; Zbl 0579.20037)], and the one in terms of dominant Drinfeld polynomials of total degree \(r\), due to \textit{E. Frenkel} and \textit{E. Mukhin} [Sel. Math., New Ser. 8, No. 4, 537--635 (2002; Zbl 1034.17009)].
