    Let \(0<c\leq p(x) \leq \infty\), \(0<c\leq q(x) \leq \infty\). Then the spaces \(L_{p(\cdot)} (\mathbb R^n)\) and \(\ell_{q(\cdot)} \big( L_{p(\cdot)} \big) (\mathbb R^n)\) of variable integrability are introduced in terms of Luxemburg quasi-norms of related Orlicz spaces. Let \(s(x) \in \mathbb R\) be \(\log\)-Hölder continuous in \(\mathbb R^n\). Then \(B^{s(\cdot)}_{p(\cdot), q(\cdot)} (\mathbb R^n)\) are Besov spaces of variable exponents collecting all \(f\in S' (\mathbb R^n)\) such that \[ \Big\| \big( 2^{\nu s(\cdot)} \phi_\nu * f \big)_\nu \, | \ell_{q(\cdot)} \big(L_{p(\cdot)} \big) (\mathbb R^n) \Big\| <\infty, \] where \(\{ \phi_\nu \}\) is the standard dyadic resolution of unity. The author complements the existing theory of these spaces by proving characterizations in terms of Peetre's maximal function (Theorem 1), local means (Theorem 2) and atomic expansions (Theorem 3).
