The authors introduce the concept of continuum-wise hyperbolicity, which extends the notion of hyperbolicity w.r.t. the continuum theory. This involves a discussion of similarities and differences between topological hyperbolicity and continuum-wise hyperbolicity. On this basis, a shadowing lemma for cw-hyperbolic homeomorphisms is established in the form of the \(L\)-shadowing property and also a spectral decomposition is obtained in this framework. The proof requires to generalize a previous construction of a hyperbolic metric using only cw-expansivity, resulting in a hyperbolic cw-metric. In addition, the notion of cw\(N\)-hyperbolicity, \(N\in{\mathbb N}\), is introduced and illustrated using examples, such as hyperbolic homeomorphisms on \({\mathbb S}^2\). Persistence of these hyperbolicity notions under topological conjugacy is shown. Moreover, one finds characterizations in terms of expansivity and shadowing properties.
