Let \(G\) be a locally compact group which is second countable as a topological space and which is equipped with its right invariant Haar measure \(\lambda\). For a strictly positive \(w\in L^\infty(G)\) with \(\frac{1}{w}\in L^\infty(G)\) and \(a\in G\), the weighted translation operator \(T_{a,w}\), defined by \(T_{a,w}f(x)=w(x)f(xa^{-1})\), is a continuous linear operator on \(L^p(G)\) with continuous linear inverse. The author considers the sequence \(C_n=\frac{1}{2}(T_{a,w}^n+T_{a,w}^{-n})\), \(n\in\mathbb{N}_0,\) of continuous linear operators on \(L^p(G)\), which he calls a cosine operator function. In the case of \(a\) being aperiodic, i.e., the closed subgroup generated by \(a\) is not compact, a characterization of topological transitivity and mixing of \((C_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}_0}\) on \(L^p(G)\), \(1\leq p<\infty,\) is given. Moreover, topological transitivity of a finite direct sum of such cosine operator functions is also characterized. The essential part of the proofs consists in an almost verbatim repetition of the arguments used by the reviewer in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 365, No. 1, 363--375 (2010; Zbl 1196.47033)] to characterize topological transitivity and mixing of cosine operator functions induced by weighted composition \(C_0\)-groups on \(L^p(\Omega,\mu)\), \(1\leq p<\infty\), where \(\Omega\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n\) is open and \(\mu\) is a locally finite Borel measure on \(\Omega\).
