In the article [\textit{T. Dyckehoff} and \textit{M. Kapranov}, ``Higher Segal spaces. I'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1212.3563}] the authors introduced the notion of $k$-Segal spaces, for every $k \geq 1$ integer, which are simplicial topological spaces satisfying some constraints controlled by polyhedral subdivisions of $k$-dimensional cyclic polytopes. They generalize previous definitions by \textit{C. Rezk} [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 353, No. 3, 973--1007 (2001; Zbl 0961.18008)] for $k = 1$, and by \textit{I. Gálvez-Carrillo} et al. [Adv. Math. 331, 952--1015 (2018; Zbl 1403.00023)] for $k= 2$. \par After reviewing in Section 1 some preliminary results about $1$- and $2$-Segal spaces, as well as the Waldhausen construction, the author introduces in Section 2 the relative versions of the previous higher Segal spaces (see Def. 2.1 and 2.4), and studies some of their properties. As remarked by the author, the notion of relative $2$-Segal space was independently considered by \textit{T. Walde} [``Hall monoidal categories and categorical modules'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1611.08241}]. The author also presents a modified version of the Waldhausen construction, consisting of a unital relative $2$-Segal space from a linear category with stability function and framing (see Thm. 2.10), as well as an example coming from almost complex manifolds with real structures (see Thm. 2.11). \par In Section 3 the author studies some natural nerve constructions on small categories with duality, that lead to a unital (right) relative $1$-Segal simplicial grupoid (see Prop. 3.4) and a unital relative $2$-Segal simplicial grupoid if the category is further endowed with an endofunctor satisfying some compatibility conditions (see Thm. 3.8). He also constructs a Hermitian version of the previous relative Waldhausen construction in this case, if the category is assumed to be proto-exact, the duality functor is exact and some further hypotheses (see Thm. 3.10). Finally, in Section 4, he considers applications to categorical Hall algebras, constructing for instance a categorical representation of the Hall algebra from a relative $2$-Segal space satisfying some assumptions (see Thm. 4.4, but also Thm. 4.5, for a monoidal variant). He also gives many interesting examples. Some of these results were independently proved by [loc. cit.].
