This paper is twofold. First, geometric optics analysis (in Wiener algebra) is performed on the Davey-Stewartson system \[ i\partial_t\psi+\frac{1}{2}(\eta\partial_{x_1}^2+\partial_{x_2}^2)\psi=(\partial_{x_1}\chi+\mu|\psi|^2)\psi,\qquad (\partial_{x_1}^2+\partial_{x_2}^2)\chi=\lambda\partial_{x_1}|\psi|^2. \] The authors show in particular that the nonlinear term \(\partial_{x_1}\chi\psi\) roughly behaves as the sum of a cubic nonlinearity (as for NLS) and a nonlocal term. This nonlinear term prevents one from obtaining an obvious convergence rate for the error estimate between the exact solution and the (WKB) geometric optics approximation. Secondly, using the previous analysis, instability results in negative order Sobolev spaces are deduced. This is based on the fact that the cubic-like nonlinear term creates non-oscillating terms from oscillations (this requires dimension greater than \(1\)). Contrary to \textit{I. Bejenaru} and \textit{T. Tao} [J. Funct. Anal. 233, No. 1, 228--259 (2005; Zbl 1090.35162)] the proof is constructive since it compares the exact solution to the WKB approximation and gives the rate of norm inflation. This strategy however requires some restriction to the set of negative Sobolev indices.
