The unbounded norm topology (abbreviated, un-topology) associated to a Banach lattice \(E\) is defined via the un-convergence of nets. Precisely, a net \((x_{a})_{\alpha}\) is said to un-converge to a vector \(x\) if \(\left\| |x_{\alpha}-x|\wedge u\right\| \rightarrow0\) for every \(u\in E_{+}\). It is proved that the un-topology is metrizable if and only if \(E_+\) has a quasi-interior point; if \(e\) is a quasi-interior point, then \(d(x,y)=\left\| \left| x-y\right| \wedge e\right\| \) is a metric for the un-topology. The un-topology agrees with the norm topology if and only if \(E\) has a strong unit. If \(E\) is an order continuous Banach lattice, then the un-topology on \(E\) is locally convex if and only if \(E\) is atomic. In general, the whole space is not un-complete, but every bounded convex and closed subset of a reflexive Banach lattice (in particular, of any \(L^{p}\)-space with \(1< p<\infty)\) is un-complete. The closed unit ball of a Banach lattice \(E\) is un-compact if and only if \(E\) is an atomic KB-space. The paper also includes results describing the connection between un-convergence and weak\(^{\ast} \)-convergence (as well as several useful remarks concerning the un-compact operators).
