The interesting paper under review deals with the Fu-Yau equation \[ i\partial\bar{\partial}(e^u\omega -\alpha'e^{-u}\rho)\wedge \omega^{n-2}+n\alpha'i\partial\bar{\partial} u \wedge i \partial\bar{\partial}u\wedge \omega^{n-2}+\mu \dfrac{\omega^n}{n!}=0 \] with slope parameter \(\alpha',\) for an unknown scalar function \(u.\) Here \(n\) is the dimension of the compact Kähler manifold \((X,\omega),\) \(\mu: X\to\mathbb{R}\) is a smooth function satisfying \(\int_X \mu \frac{\omega^n}{n!}=0,\) \(\rho\) is a smooth real \((1,1)\) form, and the solution \(u\) is required to be admissible, in the sense that the vector \(\lambda'\) of eigenvalues of the Hermitian form \[ e^u\omega+\alpha' e^{-u}\rho +2n\alpha'i\partial\bar{\partial}u \] with respect to \(\omega\) lies in the admissible cone \[ \Gamma_2=\big\{\lambda\in \mathbb{R}^n: \;\sigma_1(\lambda)>0, \sigma_2(\lambda)>0\big\} \] with \(\sigma_k(\lambda)\) being the \(k\)-th symmetric function of \(\lambda.\) When \(\alpha'=0\) the equation reduces to a Laplacian equation for \(e^u.\) In the case \(\text{dim\,}X=2,\) the non-trivial equation was solved by \textit{J.-X. Fu} and \textit{S.-T. Yau} first for \(\alpha'<0\) [J. Differ. Geom. 78, No. 3, 369--428 (2008; Zbl 1141.53036)] and then for \(\alpha'>0\) [Commun. Anal. Geom. 15, No. 1, 29--76 (2007; Zbl 1122.35145)]. In the paper under review, the authors solve the Fu-Yau equation with negative slope parameter in arbitrary dimension. Precisely, they prove that, given \(\alpha'<0,\) for any dimension \(n\geq 2,\) any smooth \((1,1)\) form \(\rho\) and any smooth function \(\mu\) satisfying \(\int_X \mu\omega^n=0,\) there exists a constant \(M'\) so that, for all \(M_0\geq M',\) there exists a smooth admissible solution \(u\) to the Fu-Yau equation with the normalization \[ \int_X e^u=M_0. \]
