Generic weights for finite reductive groups
The paper is motivated by Alperin's weight conjecture for finite groups and studies finite reductive groups in non-defining characteristic. It introduces a generalization of \(e\)-cuspidality and \(e\)-Jordan-cuspidality, defines generic weights from \(e\)-Jordan-generalized-cuspidal pairs and shows that these generic weights can play the role of Alperin weights in the investigation of the inductive Alperin weight condition for simple groups of Lie type at most good primes.\N\NA substantial part of the paper is devoted to the analysis of generalized cuspidality. For groups of type \(\mathsf{A}\) and odd primes, the unipotent \(e\)-generalized-cuspidal characters are classified and shown to be parametrized by hook partitions in the relevant cases. The paper also studies bad primes and formulates evidence for the expected equivalence between \((e,\ell)\)-generalized-cuspidality and its Jordan version. Under an extendibility assumption, generic weights are described in terms of defect zero characters of relative Weyl groups.\N\NFor special linear and unitary groups, Theorem 5.1 establishes an equivariant correspondence between generic weights and ordinary weights. The main result (Theorem 6.2) relates weights and generic weights through block isomorphisms of character triples and this is then used to derive criteria for the inductive Alperin weight condition and for its blockwise version. The final section proposes a question on character correspondences for relative Weyl groups and proves the expected correspondence for all unipotent blocks and for quasi-isolated blocks of exceptional groups.
