Intrinsic performance limits of linear feedback control

From MaRDI portal

Consider a simple feedback system of a plant \(P\) with feedback \(F\), then the open loop transfer function is \(L=PF\), the sensisitivity function is \(S=(I+L)^{-1}\) and the complementary sensitivity function is \(T=LS\). This paper gives the best achievable bounds for the \(H_\infty\) norm of \(S\) and \(T\). These are important because they give the a priori intrinsic performance limits, independent of compensator design, and thus provide insights toward the understanding of fundamental limitations in feedback control. The analysis is done for MIMO systems both in discrete and in continuous time. It is based on the known fact that a sensitivity minimization problem is in fact a Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem. The results depend on the zero and pole structure and their relative orientations. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0918.00041].
