The paper deals with the system \(u^1_{tt}-\Delta u^1+u^1_t= |u^k|^{p_1}\), \(u^i_{tt}-\Delta u^i+u^i_t= |u^{i-1}|^{p_i}\), \(i=2,\dots ,k\) in \( (0,\infty )\times\mathbb R^n,\) where \(k\geq 2\), \(n\geq 1\) and \(p_i>1\) for \(i=1,\dots ,k\). If \(n\leq 3\) and certain numbers determined by \(p_1,\dots ,p_k\) satisfy the inequality \(\alpha \equiv \max \alpha _i<n/2\), then the Cauchy problem has a unique global solution for sufficiently small initial data. If \(\alpha \geq n/2\) and the initial data satisfy some integral conditions, then the mild solution of the problem blows-up in a finite time.
