Adaptive control based on explicit criterion minimization (English)
This paper presents a novel approach to the design of adaptive control systems. Stated briefly, the basic idea is to minimize a given objective function with respect to the adjustable parameters of a given regulator structure, using an on-line stochastic approximation like algorithm. This idea can be applied to general systems, regulators and objective functions; however, most of the analysis in the paper deals with linear systems, linear regulators and quadratic objective criteria. It is shown that depending on the procedure used to get information about the system dynamics, various adaptive control schemes are obtained; for example, the self-tuning regulator corresponds to a special way of identifying the system transfer function. Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the performances of the design philosophy proposed. The paper is clearly written and in the opinion of this reviewer it is a must for anybody dealing with adaptive control systems.
