The paper is a survey of results obtained by the large society of in differential geometers remaining under the great scientific influence of G. F. Laptev. Following S. P. Finikov, G. F. Laptev and his associates successfully applied É.~Cartan's method of exterior forms and of moving frames to study the general theory of geometric objects. The author keeps a traditional manner of presentation alive. The text is divided into three chapters: I. The Cartan method in differential-geometric studies, II. The Laptev method of differential-geometric studies, III. The Cartan-Laptev method in the study of the geometry of fiber manifolds. The work contains an extensive list of references (229 items) serving as a good guide for mathematicians interested in the field.
