The authors introduce low regularity exponential-type integrators for nonlinear Schrödinger equations, for which first-order convergence only needs the boundedness of one additonal derivative of the solution. Specifically, a certain first-order convergence for solutions is shown for the derived scheme, allowing for lower regularity assumptions on the data, than some of the classical splitting methods, for instance. For one-dimensional quadratic Schrödinger equations, first-order convergence is proved even without any loss of regularity. Numerical experiments are performed, where the proposed exponential-type integrator is applied to Schrödinger equations with low regularity solutions in the energy space. Here, comparisons are made between the new method and the classical Lie splitting, the classical Strang splitting and the classical first-order exponential integrator, and conclusions are drawn showing how the new method is superior in the given framework.
