Let $1p$, $q \infty$ and $1\leq r \leq \infty$. If one replaces in the well-known Fourier-analytical definition of $F^s_{p,q} (\mathbb{R}^n)$ the basis Lebesgue spaces $L_p (\mathbb{R}^n)$ by the more general Lorentz spaces $L_{p,r} (\mathbb{R}^n)$ then one obtains the spaces $F^{s,r}_{p,q} (\mathbb{R}^n)$. The aim of the paper is twofold. First the authors derive sufficiently strong properties (including Michlin type Fourier multiplier assertions and the boundedness of the Hilbert transform) such that these spaces can be used to study (nonlinear) PDEs. Secondly the authors use these spaces and their properties to deal with Navier-Stokes equations.
