Let \(M\) be a complete Riemannian manifold, \(A\) a von Neumann algebra with faithful normal trace \(\tau : A \to \mathbb{C}\) and \(E = E^{+} \oplus E^{-}\) a \(\mathbb{Z}_2\)-graded \(A\)-Hilbert module of finite type. The operator \(\mathcal{D} = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & D^{-} \\ D^{+} & 0 \end{pmatrix}\) consists of elliptic differential operators \(D^{\pm} : C^{\infty}(M, E^{\pm}) \to C^{\infty}(M, E^{\mp})\) and \(\mathcal{D}\) is assumed to have uniformly bounded principal symbol. Furthermore, \(\mathcal{F} := \begin{pmatrix} 0 & F^{-} \\ F^{+} & 0 \end{pmatrix}\) is an odd selfadjoint endomorphism of \(E\) that is admissible, i.e. the anticommutant is the \(0\)-operator and \(\mathcal{F}\) has essentially compact support. The operator \(B := \mathcal{D} + \mathcal{F}\) is an operator of Callias type which is \(\tau\)-Fredholm, hence the \(\tau\)-index \(\mathrm{ind}_{\tau}(B) := \mathrm{dim}_{\tau} \mathrm{ker} B^{+} - \mathrm{dim}_{\tau} \mathrm{ker} B^{-}\) is finite. The paper under review consists of the following main results concerning the \(\tau\)-index of such Callias type operators: A relative index theorem for a partitioned manifold along a hypersurface, a Callias type index theorem as an analogue of [\textit{U. Bunke}, Math. Ann. 303, No. 2, 241--279; (1995, Zbl 0835.58035)] and [\textit{N. Anghel}, Geom. Funct. Anal. 3, No. 5, 431--438; (1993, Zbl 0843.58116)] and the cobordism invariance of the \(\tau\)-index. Finally, the authors consider the \(\Gamma\)-index theorem for Galois covers of \(M\) with covering group \(\Gamma\).
