This paper introduces the notion of swapping algebra that is a Poisson algebra generated by pairs of points on the circle and relates this notion to two well-known Poisson structures: the Poisson structure discovered by Atiyah-Bott-Goldman and the Poisson structure described geometrically by Drinfel'd and Sokolov. A subalgebra of the fraction algebra of the swapping algebra is interpreted as an algebra of functions on the space of cross ratios. Moreover, the author proves a generalization of the Wolpert formula, which computes the brackets of length functions for the Hitchin component.
