The authors analyze the structure of inverse problems which arise in plasmonics. In particular, they show that the set of plasmonic resonances for a single particle is essentially finite, but it could be infinite for particles that are closely touching. The authors show that certain algebraic domains, which have boundary represented by \[ \theta \mapsto e^{\rho_0} (e^{i\theta} +\delta e^{-im\theta}) \] have only two plasmonic resonances asymptotically, while two touching discs have an infinite number of plasmonic resonances. A number of numerical examples for gold nanoparticles are provided at the end of the article. The eigenvalues of a certain Neumann-Poincaré operator are demonstrated to contribute to the set of plasmonic resonances.
