The paper is devoted to the numerical solution of one-dimensional Cauchy singular integral equations of the form \[ a(t)u(t)+\frac{1}{\pi i}\int_\Gamma[\frac{b(\tau)}{\tau-t}+ h(t,\tau)]u(\tau)d\tau=f(t), \tag{1} \] where \(a,b,f:\Gamma \to C,\) \(h:\Gamma \times \Gamma \to C\) are given functions and \(u: \Gamma \to C\) is sought, the integration curve \(\Gamma\) is the unit circle \(\Gamma=\{t: |t|=1\}\) in the periodic case or \(\Gamma=(-1,1)\) in the non periodic case. For the both cases the authors discuss the stability of operator sequences associated with different projection methods (finite sections, collocation and other methods) and fast algorithms for the solution of equation (1). A review of modern methods of proof for the solution of equation (1) which use Banach algebra techniques is given.
