The authors study the almost Gorensteinness of the Rees algebra of a class of ideals in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. Let \((A,\mathfrak{m})\) be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring and \(I \subset A\) be an ideal. Then the Rees algebra \(\mathcal{R}(I)\), of \(I\) is almost Gorenstein in each of the following cases: (1) \((A,\mathfrak{m})\) is a two-dimensional excellent Gorenstein normal local ring over an algebraically closed field, and \(I\) is a \(p_g\)-ideal (Theorem 1.3). (2) \((A,\mathfrak{m})\) is a two-dimensional almost Gorenstein local ring having minimal multiplicity and \(I=\mathfrak{m}^{\ell}\), for any \(\ell \geq 1\) (Theorem 1.4). Furthermore, the authors characterize the almost Gorensteinness of \(\mathcal{R}(\mathfrak{m}^{\ell}).\) Let \((A,\mathfrak{m})\) be a regular local ring of dimension \(d \geq 2\) that possesses an infinite residue class field. Then \(\mathcal{R}(\mathfrak{m}^{\ell})\) is almost Gorenstein if and only if \(\ell=1\), \(d=2\) or \(\ell=d-1\). Further, for \(\ell\geq 2\) and \(d\geq 3\), \(\mathcal{R}(\mathfrak{m}^{\ell})_{\mathfrak{M}}\) is almost Gorenstein if and only if \(\ell ~|~ d-1\), where \(\mathfrak{M}\) denotes the graded maximal ideal of \(\mathcal{R}(\mathfrak{m}^{\ell})\) (Theorem 1.6).
